In a special Orpington Literary Festival event, hear Simon Weston CBE in conversation with Dr Tessa Dunlop.
When the RFA Sir Galahad was destroyed in the Bluff Cove Air Attack during the Falklands War, in 1982, on board was Simon Weston, Welsh Guardsman. Simon was severely injured, sustaining serious burns to 46% of his body. He has become well-known across the United Kingdom and abroad for his struggle to overcome his injuries and redefine his role in life, and his message is one of achievement, of triumph in the face of adversity, and of seizing the moment and succeeding.
His autobiography Walking Tall was No1 in the best selling list. Going Back was also a best seller being in the top 10 for eight weeks. He then wrote a series of fiction books with titles such as Cause of Death and Phoenix. His most recent book, Moving On was published in 2003 and sees Simon lay his Falklands ghosts to rest.
Simon has published 4 children’s books - A Nod From Nelson, Nelson to the Rescue, and Nelson at Sea and Get Fit wit Nelson and in 2014 was delighted to be asked to voiceover some children’s stories for CBeebies.
Historian, writer, and broadcaster Tessa Dunlop has written several oral history books and presented history programmes for the BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, UKTV History and the History Channel. As a contributor she has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Today and The World Tonight programmes, Classic FM, Sky News, BBC Breakfast. With a reputation for speaking truth to power and a particular interest in war and royalty, Tessa is currently writing a book on war commemoration, Lest We Forget.
Tessa's book The Century Girls was a Times Bestseller, which was followed by Sunday Times bestseller The Army Girls - inspired by 80th anniversary of conscription for British women in December 2021. Her most recent book, Elizabeth and Philip: A Story of Young Love, Marriage and Monarchy, was published last year to widespread acclaim.
In a special event as part of Orpington Literary Festival, come and hear Simon Weston CBE and Dr Tessa Dunlop discuss career, life, and overcoming adversity.
