Orpington Welcomes Its May Queen

The Orpington May Queen made her graceful journey through the town centre last weekend, continuing a tradition that links Orpington to centuries of English springtime customs. The May Queen represents renewal, community spirit, and the arrival of brighter days.

Her procession passed through the High Street and into Priory Gardens, where the celebrations continued with music, maypole dancing, and family activities.

Rooted in ancient May Day festivities, the May Queen tradition has evolved over generations, yet its purpose remains the same: to bring people together, mark the start of summer, and celebrate the character of the community. In Orpington, it remains a cherished part of the town’s cultural calendar, blending heritage with the everyday life of the town centre.
