College’s volunteering effort recognised with community award

London South East Colleges was named Corporate Volunteer Team of the Year last night at Bromley’s Annual Volunteer Awards, hosted by Community Links Bromley.

This award recognised the huge contribution made by staff and students to the local community, having spearheaded both a national Foodbank campaign (FE Foodbank Friday) and a pioneering volunteering initiative – www.goodformegoodforfe.com

The event was held at Bromley Central Library and attended by over 100 guests - including the Deputy Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Christine Harris, volunteers, trustees and colleagues from other local charities.

Eight awards were presented, celebrating the fantastic work being done by volunteers across Bromley and thanking them for the difference they make to their communities.

London South East Colleges’ Principal and Chief Learning Officer, Asfa Sohail, attended the event and was presented with the award. She said:

“We are delighted to receive this award, which recognises the commitment of our wonderful staff and students to the local community.

“As a Further and Higher Education College, we support people to gain the skills they need to progress into fulfilling and successful employment. However, our college community is also committed to supporting others in many other ways, far beyond simply delivering qualifications.

“We have taken this a step further by helping other colleges around the country to mobilise their own staff and students; encouraging them to volunteer, generate social value in their communities and operate as the truly civic organisations that FE Colleges are.

“It was extremely inspiring to hear the stories of so many wonderful volunteers, working hard to make a positive difference to other people’s lives. Bromley has a fantastic volunteering community and we are proud to be part of it. Well done to all the winners – keep up the very good work!”

London South East Colleges sponsored the Young Volunteer of the Year Award – with the college’s Group Chief Strategy Officer, Louise Wolsey, presenting this to winner Mikail Hussain.
